Our Story
See a Need, Fill a Need
A Letter from our Owner
In 2007 after a devastating loss, I found myself running all over the city, searching for some sort of keepsake or memento. Anything - a necklace, an ornament, a picture frame, a plaque? Anything, something tangible, something I could hold in my hand, something pretty. Something—anything—that said he was here, he mattered, he was loved and truly missed.
I looked in religious stores, gift shops, bookstores. I live in the city of New Orleans. Surely, I’d be able to find something. A few stores did carry a small seclection of memorial gifts. (Often displayed among the sea of festive, joyous NOLA and holiday themed merchandise. Commemorate a dead pet? You betcha! Finding merchandise for pets was no problem. Finding something to honor a baby who died was impossible.
I eventually purchased a couple of remembrance items online. The selection was limited and it still was frustrating not to be able to see it until it arrived in the mail. It shouldn't be this difficult I thought, especially when I was struggling to make sense of it all. Why couldn't I walk into a shop or space and find something to honor and cherish his memory?

The idea for Violet Dragonflies was planted subconsciously almost 20 years ago. Simply put, I wish there was a store like this when I needed it.

I believe that in our modern society we don’t always give people space, time and respect in their grieving process. Often people just don’t know what to do or say for someone who has just lost a loved one. Acknowledgement, compassion and respecting their grief journey and timeline are valuable. I hope this store can help change that in some small way. As Mr. Bigweld said in the movie Robots, “see a need fill a need.”

Peace and gentleness to you,
Laine
